⛽️ A Quick Self-Calibration and Self-Fueling Exercise as you start your Week


Hi Reader. I know that it can be very easy to forget how amazing you are, and with that, the talents and characteristics you possess that can help you move through any situation, and or propel you forward, toward your life, leadership and or business dreams, goals and targets.

So, I thought I'd create this quick re-calibration and re-fueling' exercise as you start your week, to help you not only remember how exceptional you are, but as support in you believing in yourself as you follow your dreams, make time for your passions and set even higher goals.

No-one else can do what you do in the way that you can. Your dreams matter. Your goals matter. There is literally only one you. It doesn't matter how long it will take, just don't let your goals and dreams die just because it feels unreachable right now. I've got you.

Start by taking out a piece of paper and a pen. Then find a quiet spot. Answer the following questions: If someone were to ask you what your characteristics were, especially your positive traits, what would they say? Take your time to write them down. Don't rush. Really think through these. This is the most important part of this exercise. Add all the compliments that people have given you and or give you.

Once done, turn your piece of paper over, and:

  1. Choose one area of your life, leadership or business that is not working for you right now. Or not working to the level at which you would like it to work. Describe the situation in as much detail as you can.
  2. Now, write down in as much detail as you can, what you would ideally like this area to look like or to be. Be detailed.
  3. Next, ask yourself: "How does being in the situation I placed in number 1 above, make me feel right now?"
  4. Then ask: "What does not being / not having [slot in the answer you gave to number 2], make me feel"? Write this down.
  5. Once done, ask yourself: "The 'feelings' I put down in number 4 above, are they who I am? Would I describe myself as this type of person if someone were to ask me what my characteristics were?
  6. Typically, people's answer to number 5, is no. If this is so for you too, turn back to the very 1st question you answered on the other side of the paper. Read through the characteristics you listed.

The lesson here is that we sometimes interpret our feelings as being - who we are. The longer we stay in these feelings, the more we start identifying with being feelings.

Remember that neuroscientifically, the brain releases hormones and chemicals straight into the body, that are related to the way that we think, feel and act.

The more we stay in these feelings, the easier it is for the body to create matching behaviors that keep us stuck in the situation we are identify ourselves to be.

The result is that we feel depleted, tired, hopeless and helpless. We forget who we really are, our characteristics, our strengths. And the matching thoughts and feelings, which will release related hormones and chemicals, that positively influence our habits and behaviors, and keep us motivated for longer.

The longer we are motivated, the longer this becomes a habit. The longer we engage with these habits, the more they become - just who we are. Your personality literally changes to align to the level of your goals and dreams. You are what you are looking for. It is all within you.

Below is a quick exercise for you to experience this:

  1. Re-look at the situation you mentioned in Question 1 above.
  2. Then look at the positive characteristics you listed of yourself and ask: "How would a person with these characteristics get themselves from the situation they are in now (Question 1), and into the situation they would like to be (i.e. (Question 2)?
  3. What steps would they take? How would they set out to accomplish what they have written down as their goals?" Write this in detail.

Why is it important to look at your positive traits and characteristics and then to use that to fuel your plans, goals and targets?

Because the positive energy that emanates from embracing your strengths, allows you to create a forward moving and tangible roadmap that will move you from where you are, to where you want to be.

You will be surprised how you will be able to come up with solutions of how you can accelerate your progress from where you are now, to where you would like to be.

Tips

  1. Use our feelings and emotions as signals. Not as who you are. When you do that, it makes it easy for you to acknowledge them, sit with them so you can explore the message they are bringing to you, and then to move through them, without them affecting who you are, and what you do.
  2. Use the above exercise when you are feeling far off from your goals and targets. It's a quick self-coaching process.
  3. Keep a list of all your positive traits and characteristics somewhere close where you can refer to quickly and easily especially when feeling off-track, overwhelmed, or even when you want to accelerate progress you have made this far.

🌟 The Actionable Strategy

Be as clear as possible 5 things: why you are wanting to, need to, are doing what you are doing (purpose); the long term goals to achieve what you want to achieve (vision); the actual activities you need to engage in everyday, to achieve the long term goals; description of your values and how you are going to embed them in your activities; implementation plan - mission activities + timelines + available resources for each activity.
